It's a pragmatic approach that can spell the difference between life and death in times of crisis, you need to be safe. The hobby of “doomsday prepping”, that many looked at as weird and psychotic years ago, has now become more and more common. You may be doing it and not even know it, but do you have the necessities to survive the end of times?

Here's a comprehensive guide on how to equip yourself for surviving the end of the world.

What is Doomsday Prepping?

Now, doomsday prepping does not necessarily mean you have an underground bunker filled with thousands of firearms in a vault, years and years worth of food, and you wear a tinfoil hat. Doomsday prepping has become more common, and a lot of it consists of people gathering necessary supplies to survive different scenarios, such as the power grid being shut down, a foreign invasion, or others. People will typically gather enough supplies to last about 30 days.

How to Prepare for the End of Times

Now, let’s take a look further into surviving the collapse of society.

Assess the Threats

The first step in preparedness is to comprehend the diverse array of threats that could herald an apocalypse, and there are plenty of different ones that our world is facing right now. From natural cataclysms like earthquakes and hurricanes to man-made cataclysms such as nuclear conflict or societal breakdowns, a thorough risk assessment is paramount. Understanding these threats aids in prioritizing preparations and resource allocation.

For example, if your area falls under a chemical attack, that will greatly limit your food supply as the water and wildlife will be contaminated. On the other hand, if your area falls victim to the power grid shutting down, you will not have the electricity to do things like cook the food that you catch or have on hand.

Craft a Survival Plan

Once you have the threats identified, crafting a robust survival plan for whatever you are facing becomes imperative. This plan should encompass evacuation routes, rendezvous points for loved ones, and communication strategies. You have to remember that your phones and internet may not work during times like this, so having a plan like this is absolutely essential. Considerations should extend to securing food and water supplies, shelter, medical provisions, and fortification measures. A well-conceived plan mitigates panic and ensures coherent action in the face of adversity.

Stockpile Essential Supplies

Access to vital supplies is non-negotiable in any survival scenario. Amass a cache of non-perishable food items such as canned goods, grains, and dried fruits, augmented by a plentiful supply of potable water. Medications, first aid kits, batteries, flashlights, and tools for shelter construction and self-defense are indispensable. Additionally, consider including items like water filtration systems, multi-tools, and emergency blankets for added versatility.

You also need to have a “go-bag” with essentials that you can take on the go to survive, not necessarily for just sheltering in place. We will discuss what to have in a go-bag” shortly.

Acquire Survival Skills

Beyond material provisions, acquiring indispensable survival skills is paramount. Familiarize yourself with basic first aid procedures, navigation techniques, firearms training, and fire-starting methods. Mastery of wilderness survival tactics, including foraging, shelter construction, and identifying edible flora, equips you for a range of exigencies. Knowledge is the ultimate resource in the crucible of survival.

Stay Informed and Connected

In an ever-fluid crisis, staying abreast of developments is imperative. Equip yourself with a battery-powered or hand-cranked emergency radio to receive vital news and alerts. Maintain open lines of communication with family and neighbors to disseminate information and extend mutual aid. Engage with community emergency response groups and disaster preparedness organizations to tap into collective wisdom and resources.

Remain Adaptable

While meticulous planning is indispensable, flexibility is equally vital in the face of uncertainty. Apocalypse scenarios are characterized by rapid evolution, demanding nimble responses and innovative solutions. Cultivate adaptability and resilience as your greatest assets in navigating the turbulent waters of an apocalypse.

A Proper “Go-Bag”

As stated above, having a go-bag is essential. Many people will use their range bags for something like this. A go-bag is a backpack or duffel bag filled with essential items that you can take on the go in order to survive. Yes, having stockpiles worth of food and water and ammo is great, but if you are forced to evacuate, that won’t be much help. You need to have a bag filled with essentials that are ready to go. Here are some items to keep in a go-bag:

  • First Aid Kit: This is absolutely crucial, because if you are injured or wounded or someone you are with is, this will only lead to complications. If you need to be quick, you will be slowed down, and injuries and wounds can lead to more serious infections or death.
  • Ammo: A set amount of ammo is always good to have in your go-bag, whether you are fighting an enemy force or hunting for food, extra ammo is an essential to have when packing for a doomsday scenario.
  • Eye Protection: Eye protection may sound somewhat odd to have in a go-bag for doomsday prepping, but you have to consider that you will be up against the elements. Flying debris, the sun, and whatever else you may come against can pose a serious threat. That being said, having a proper pair of sunglasses or even regular anti-fog shooting eyewear can help to keep your eyes shielded in all different scenarios.
  • Extra Clothing: You never know what you will be up against in a doomsday scenario, so having extra clothing for the elements is essential.

Doomsday Prep Wrap Up

Preparation for the apocalypse may seem daunting, but by conducting thorough risk assessments, crafting robust survival plans, stockpiling essential supplies, acquiring vital skills, staying informed, and fostering adaptability, you significantly enhance your chances of weathering the storm. Remember, the end of the world may herald chaos, but with foresight, fortitude, and a supportive community, survival is not only possible but probable.
